A fight that ended in a hail of bullets, a killing on the interstate and a drive-by shooting left a total of three people dead in a spurt of violence in Baton Rouge on Thursday night, Baton Rouge police said.
Police are investigating the three separate shootings, but did not immediately find evidence they were related.
The first killing happened at close to 5:30 p.m. at a convenience store at 5557 Plank Road. Martelle Hamilton, 22, and another man had fought at the store, the Uncle Moe's Food Mart, when Hamilton started returning to his vehicle, police said.
The other man opened fire, shooting Hamilton multiple times. Hamilton died at the scene, police said in a news release Friday morning.
The second fatal shooting happened about an hour later, when Trene Walls, 39, was traveling north on Interstate I-110.
Shots were fired at her from a vehicle that pulled alongside her, police said. Walls died at the scene. There were no other occupants in her vehicle.
The third homicide happened shortly after 10 p.m., police said.
The victim, Darryl Edebiri, 31, was standing with several other people outside in the 4700 block of Glen Oaks Drive.
An unknown vehicle approached the group and someone inside opened fire, shooting Edebiri several times police said.
Edebiri was transported to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.
