Working them in the Town of Fenton in an area where he usually hopes to get In a lot of dog training and a little shooting come hunting season, he came across two dead birds. Both were tagged by the Conservation Department. Both birds were In bad feather with most of the saddle hackle having been picked out before the birds were released. Our reporter said one of the birds had been "billed" (its upper beak cut away) during the rearing period. It had obviously not grown again before the bird was released.

IT IS OBVIOUSLY unfair to preach a sermon or attack the Conservation Department editorially until we know the facts. Our reporter Is going to send the tags into the Game Division of the Conservation Department and a report should be forthcoming. It is possible, of course, that the birds reported had been raised by the Conservation Department but had been held too long by cooperating sportsmen before the pheasants were released. It Is also possible that the birds were raised by some cooperating group of sportsmen whose Inexperience accounted for the Inferior quality of the stock. Whatever the score, It becomes clear that stocking poor quality pheasants is a waste of time and money.

SULLIVAN COUNTY youngsters are going to have one glamorous day this month. It comes on Aug. 18 when the county promotion bureau stages a fishing derby at Clmaron City, outside Monticello. Contestants (boys andor girls must be between the ages of 6 and 12 and must be accompanied by an adult. Application for a free ticket of entry should be filled at the office of the Sullivan County Publicity and Development Bureau Before Aug.

15. Contestants should bring their own hook line and rod. The prize will be trout. One old mossback of the lunker type has been named John L. Sullivan.

He is reportedly swimming around the Rodeo pool ten times dally just to get in condition. Most interesting of all for the young anglers, the contest will be opened officially by Chief Ironhorse, full-blooded Comanche Indian who will call time for the fishing to begin. According to reports received this week, the trout In the Willowemac are doing all they can to lift Catsklll trout fishing out of the doldrums. One Triple Cities angler spending his vacation In the De-Bruce area sends word that there hasn't been a morning in the last week when he couldn't take his limit of browns. The happy angler said the catch has not been made up of recently stocked trout.

He believes they are fish of last year's stocking. They show a lot of punch and are in good condition. Most that he has taken are of fair size averaging 12 to 14 inches. Kerrigan, Wmpt 9 10 2 92 8 3 2 5 50 103 12 26 .250 Barry. TC.
